About the Recipe

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 cups whole buttermilk , at room temperature
1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, divided
Preparation
Step 1
Combine dry ingredients:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl until no lumps remain.

Step 2
Finish dough:
Fold buttermilk and 3 tablespoons of the melted butter into the flour mixture until just combined and dry ingredients are moistened. Don't over mix.

Step 3
Add remaining butter to dish:
Pour remaining 5 tablespoons melted butter into an 8-inch square baking dish, tilting dish to fully coat the bottom and sides with butter.

Step 4
Spread dough:
Transfer the dough to prepared baking dish, and spread gently into an even layer.

Step 5
Bake the biscuits:
Bake in preheated oven until top is golden brown and biscuits are cooked through, 23 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven, and let stand for about 5 minutes, until the butter is completely absorbed. Cut into 8 portions, serve warm, and enjoy!

Note:
Adding the buttermilk at room temperature helps incorporate it into the batter without seizing up, and makes for a more even distribution of butter throughout the biscuits.
Don't over mix the dough, or it will become tough.
Leftover biscuits are best re-heated, since the cooled butter can make the biscuits seem greasy. A quick re-heat in the microwave or oven is best.
